Shaft drive

Shaft drive refers to a traditional inboard propulsion system where the engine is mounted inside the hull, connected to a propeller via a long shaft that passes through the hull bottom (often with a strut and rudder for steering). This setup is common in larger boats, cruisers, yachts, fishing boats, and some performance vessels due to its durability, efficiency at higher speeds, smooth power delivery, better weight distribution, and reliability in rough conditions—making it ideal for offshore, coastal, or extended cruising. Unlike jet drives (no exposed prop) or outboards/sterndrives, shaft drives excel in larger hulls (typically 25ft+), offer excellent handling, and are frequently showcased at major boat shows for their proven performance in serious boating applications.
